How I built a brain imaging classifier with TypeScript
A deep-dive into building Brain Insight Classifier Nexus — the challenges of medical data processing and why TypeScript was the right choice.
One of the most interesting projects I’ve worked on is the Brain Insight Classifier Nexus. Here’s the story of how it came together.
The problem
Brain imaging data is complex, high-dimensional, and critically important to get right. Misclassifying a neural scan isn’t just a software bug — it could affect research outcomes. I wanted to build a tool that was both powerful and reliable.
Why TypeScript?
When working with medical data, type safety isn’t optional — it’s essential. TypeScript gave me:
- Compile-time guarantees that data shapes are correct
- Better IDE support for navigating complex data structures
- Confidence that refactoring won’t break critical pipelines
Key challenges
The biggest challenge was handling the variety of imaging data formats. Brain scans come in different resolutions, formats, and structures. Building a flexible but strict type system to handle this took several iterations.
Lessons learned
This project taught me that the intersection of healthcare and technology is where software can have the most meaningful impact. It also reinforced my belief that taking the time to set up proper types and data validation saves enormous amounts of debugging time later.
